TikTok SEO: Optimising for Search, Not Just the Feed

A growing share of TikTok users search rather than scroll. Learn how TikTok surfaces results, how to optimise a video for search & how to measure what works.

Ask anyone under thirty where they look for a restaurant recommendation & a meaningful share will say TikTok before Google. That behavioural shift has turned a discovery feed into a search engine, & most brands are still optimising exclusively for the feed.

The distinction matters commercially. Feed views are transient: a video performs for a few days & then stops. Search views are durable: a video that ranks for a query keeps earning views for months, from people actively looking for what it covers. For a business, the second is worth considerably more.

How TikTok decides what to show in search

TikTok does not publish a ranking specification, but the observable inputs are reasonably clear & they are not the same as the feed inputs.

  • Textual relevance. The caption, on-screen text, hashtags, & crucially the automatic transcription of what is spoken in the video. TikTok transcribes speech & uses it. This is the most underexploited fact in the entire discipline.
  • Engagement relative to views, weighted towards completion rate & rewatches rather than raw likes.
  • User signals on the result: whether searchers click your video & whether they stay.
  • Account topical consistency. Accounts that post repeatedly about one subject appear to be favoured for queries in that subject.
  • Recency, which matters but less absolutely in search than in the feed.

Say your keyword out loud in the video. The transcription indexes it, & most competitors are only writing it in the caption.

Research what people actually search on the platform

Do not import your Google keyword list. Search language on TikTok is more conversational, more question-shaped, & often more specific to lived experience.

Practical research methods, all free:

  1. The search bar autocomplete. Type a partial phrase & record the suggestions. These are real queries with real volume.
  2. Related searches shown beneath results & sometimes overlaid on videos.
  3. Comment sections on popular videos in your niche. Questions asked repeatedly in comments are queries waiting for a video.
  4. Your own account's search analytics, which show the queries that surfaced your content.

Build a list of twenty to thirty question-shaped queries relevant to your business. That list is your content calendar, & unlike trending sounds it does not expire.

Placing keywords where they count

Five surfaces, in rough order of importance.

Spoken words. State the topic clearly in the first few seconds. Speak plainly, avoid heavy background music over the key line, & do not rely on visual-only communication for your main keyword.

On-screen text. Add a text overlay containing the query, ideally phrased as the question someone would type. This serves search & it also holds viewers who are watching without sound.

Caption. Lead with the keyword phrase. Captions are short, so do not waste the opening on a greeting.

Hashtags. Three to five, mixing one broad topic tag with specific ones. Hashtag stuffing does not help & it makes the caption unreadable.

Cover image text. The thumbnail text appears on search results & profile grids. Make it state the topic rather than being decorative.

Structure the video for completion

Search relevance gets you into the results. Completion rate keeps you there.

A structure that works for informational content: state the question in the first two seconds, promise the answer, deliver it in clear steps, & close with a reason to rewatch or comment. Avoid long introductions. Nobody watching a search result wants to hear who you are before they hear the answer.

Keep videos to the length the answer requires. A thirty second answer stretched to ninety seconds destroys completion rate, & completion rate is the metric with the most leverage.

Build series rather than one-off posts

Topical consistency appears to influence which account TikTok trusts for a subject. Posting about your specialism repeatedly, in a recognisable format, compounds in a way that scattered posting does not.

Practical approach: choose five core subjects your business is genuinely expert in. Create a repeatable format for each. Publish within those subjects consistently rather than chasing unrelated trends. Trends can be used, but they should be adapted into your subject rather than replacing it.

This is the same logic as topical clustering in traditional search, & it works for the same reason.

Use comments deliberately

Comments are indexed & they are a research channel simultaneously.

Pin a comment containing an additional question people commonly ask, phrased naturally. Reply to genuine questions in the comments with substantive answers rather than emoji. Where a comment raises a good question, make it the next video & say so, which both rewards the commenter & signals topical depth.

Measure the right thing

In your analytics, look for the traffic source breakdown on each video. Views attributed to search are the ones that indicate durable performance. A video with modest total views but a high proportion from search is a better asset than one with a large one-week spike from the feed.

Track which queries surface your videos, how that set grows over time, & whether profile visits & link clicks follow. For a business, the honest final measure is enquiries, & TikTok's attribution is imperfect, so ask new enquiries where they found you.

The Nepal context

Short-form video adoption here is high & the competitive density on business topics remains low compared with saturated markets. That combination is unusual & it will not last. A business publishing genuinely useful, searchable video on its specialism now faces far less competition than it will in two years.

Consider language deliberately. Nepali-language search on the platform is materially less contested than English for the same topics, & for a locally focused business it often reaches a more relevant audience.
