Most guides to digital marketing are written for markets that do not look much like Nepal. They assume large budgets, mature attribution & consumers who research entirely online before buying. Businesses in Kathmandu are working with different conditions, & the advice needs to reflect that.
What is different about this market
Nepal is mobile first to an extent that surprises people used to Western data. For a large share of your audience, the phone is not the secondary device. It is the only device. A site that is tolerable on desktop & slow on a mid range Android phone over a patchy connection is failing most of the people who reach it.
Trust is also earned differently. Personal recommendation carries enormous weight, & a great deal of commercial conversation happens inside messaging apps & social platforms rather than on websites. Your website frequently is not where the decision gets made. It is where the decision gets checked. That distinction should change what you put on it.
Search volumes are smaller than agencies quoting international benchmarks like to admit. A term with two hundred monthly searches in Nepal can be worth far more than a term with twenty thousand searches globally, because the intent is local & the competition is thinner. Chasing volume here is a mistake.
Which channels actually earn their place
Local search & Google Business Profile
For any business with a physical presence or a service area, this is the highest return work available, & it is routinely neglected. A complete & active Google Business Profile with correct categories, real photographs, current hours, answered questions & a steady flow of genuine reviews will out perform a great deal of paid activity, at no media cost.
Consistency matters more than people expect. Your name, address & phone number should match exactly everywhere they appear. Variations across directories weaken the signal that you are one coherent business.
Organic search
Worth doing where your customers genuinely research before buying, which covers most B2B, education, healthcare, professional services & considered purchases. Less urgent for impulse categories where social discovery dominates.
The advantage in Nepal is that technical standards are generally low. A fast, well structured site that actually answers customer questions can reach the top of a category faster here than in a saturated market. That window will not stay open forever.
Social platforms
Facebook, Instagram & TikTok carry real commercial weight, & increasingly they function as search engines rather than feeds. People look for businesses inside them. That means your profile, your captions & your on screen text need to be optimised for search, not just for the algorithm's feed ranking.
The common mistake is treating social as a broadcast channel. In this market the comment thread & the direct message are frequently where the sale happens. Staffing the response is more valuable than increasing the posting rate.
Paid advertising
Useful, but usually not first. Paid media rents attention & stops the moment you stop paying. Where it earns its place is in testing: it tells you within a fortnight which messages & which offers people respond to, which then informs the organic & content work that compounds.
The most common waste we see is running paid traffic to a page that was never built to convert. Fix the destination before you buy the visit.
Where budgets get wasted
Paying for a website that nobody maintains. A brochure site launched & then left alone loses relevance steadily. Budget a small amount for ongoing work rather than a large amount every three years for a rebuild.
Buying followers, reviews or links. Beyond the ethical problem, these are detectable, they carry real risk to your Google Business Profile, & they build nothing. A single genuine review from a real customer is worth more than fifty purchased ones.
Reporting on vanity metrics. Reach, impressions & follower counts are easy to grow & tell you almost nothing. If your monthly report does not connect to enquiries, you are paying for a document rather than an outcome.
Copying international campaigns. Tactics that work in markets with different devices, different platforms & different buying behaviour often do not transfer. Test before committing.
How to sequence it with a limited budget
If you are starting from very little, the order matters more than the total spend.
- Make the site fast & usable on a mid range phone. Everything downstream depends on it.
- Complete & activate your Google Business Profile. Highest return per unit of effort available in this market.
- Fix the conversion path. Make it obvious what you do, who it is for, what it costs to start & how to make contact. Shorten every form.
- Answer the ten questions customers always ask. One page each, written properly. This serves organic search, answer engines & your own sales conversations at the same time.
- Build a genuine review flow. Ask every satisfied customer, consistently.
- Only then buy traffic. With the foundations in place, paid media has somewhere worth sending people.
A realistic expectation
Local search improvements can show within weeks. Conversion fixes show almost immediately. Organic growth in a competitive category takes months, not weeks. Anyone in this market promising first page rankings in thirty days is either targeting terms nobody searches or is not being straight with you.
The businesses that win here are rarely the ones with the largest budgets. They are the ones that fixed the basics, showed up consistently & made it easy to get in touch.
